3. How to get an instrument
Would you like your child to have the chance to learn a musical instrument but are not sure you want the initial expense of buying one? Then hiring may be your best option. Alternatively if you are ready to buy your own instrument your school may be able to help to purchase using the Assisted Purchase scheme. We have provided some guidance with a link to the HMRC website which may be helpful for your school.
4. How to find a teacher
Ask your school if lessons are available with a visiting instrumental teacher or contact the Milton Keynes Music Co-operative to find out about lessons outside of school.
5. School activities and events
Get involved in one of our many events for schools. You may find yourself singing in an opera, performing Bollywood Brass or helping a professional orchestra ‘wake-up’ their instruments!
You may like to join in with our Instrumental Festivals for Brass, Woodwind and String players or perhaps come along and sing in our Primary Music Festival, an exciting event involving 1500 Milton Keynes students over two days or maybe you are just starting out and would love to play in our Infant Celebration concert. Ask your school which events they are attending and join in!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a good quality instrumental teacher?
With so many instrumental teachers available the Music Service has developed a ‘Professional Partner’ scheme with instrumental teachers. These teachers have been interviewed by the Music Service and, if appointed, commit to ongoing professional development and high standards of teaching.
The current list of ‘Professional Partner’ teachers that the Music Service can recommend can be found here: Professional Partners
All ‘Professional Partners’ have checks on their DBS status, Public Liability Insurance and ongoing support to ensure that they have access to training and regular discussion about their practice.
Where do I go to learn a musical instrument?
The leading organisation in Milton Keynes specialising in instrumental tuition is the Milton Keynes Music Co-op. Currently consisting of around 65 teachers that teach a wide range of instruments, teaching takes place at a number of venues around Milton Keynes.
For further details look them up at www.mkmusiccoop.com or contact them directly at mkmusiccoop@gmail.com or telephone 01908 699052. Please note that not all Music Co-op members may be a Music Service ‘Professional Partner’. If in doubt please ask the Music Co-op when you contact them.
I or my child already plays a musical instrument. Where can we join a group or band?
MK Music Faculty runs a weekly Music Centre which has a large-range of music groups for children from the ages of 2 to adults.
